HARO (Help a Reporter Out) (a Cision Company)


Help a Reporter Out (HARO), a Cision company, is a free online social networking service set up for journalists to quickly gather input for stories they're writing. It was founded as a Facebook group in 2007 by Peter Shankman, and was later turned into a mailing list claiming over 100,000 members. Now, HARO brings nearly 30,000 reporters and bloggers, over 100,000 news sources and thousands of small businesses together to tell their stories, promote their brands and sell their products and services.


You can sign up by providing your email address and a password to read your HARO's every day, and keep an eye open for those specific media queries you’re qualified to comment on and act as a source for. You can also submit pitches when you find a query within your area of expertise.


The service is free. Fees are required to receive HARO Publicity Alerts from Vocus. You'll receive real-time media opportunities, straight from journalists on a deadline needing a source. The Standard Package is $19.00 per month; Advanced Package is $49.00 per month; Premium Package is $149 per month.


This isn't a traditional "editorial calendar directory". It's most similar to ProfNet Experts except these are reporters writing stories looking for pitches
